“I can’t live without ____.” This is a resounding statement my pastor made during our recent sermon series at church. Is there anything in your life aside from God that you can’t live without? “If I can’t have ____, I will die.” It’s a powerful concept but true. Whatever you give your absolute salvation to is your “god”. It is your redeeming factor, it consumes your thoughts and your heart. As my pastor said today, you will work for it, worship it, exhaust yourself for it. Think upon that for a moment. What is in your life that you just can’t live without?
As followers of Christ, it is imperative that we check our hearts regularly. Is there anything that we are putting before God? There should be nothing that gives us life & meaning outside of our Creator. Rachel so desired a child that she made the statement that if she was not given a child then she would die…sadly the very thing that she desired the most that she believed would give her life is what ultimately took her life (she died during the birth of her second son). She had “everything” so to speak & was consumed with her desire so much that it ultimately took her life (another point made during our sermon series).
The sermon notes provided to accompany the message states the following:
“An idol is something or someone – other than God – that we look to for happiness, security, and ultimate meaning. It is a counterfeit god – anything so central & essential to your life that, should you lose it, your life would feel hardly worth living. It is anything that you seek to give you what only God can give.”
Wow, definitely something to meditate on… it’s getting late…I have much more to share but it will have to wait for another day…
